Today we'd like to introduce you to local small biz whiz Kristy Scaddan.  Kristy is the gal behind Perth leather goods business FARLANDS, and she hand crafts all the gorgeous leather goods that feature in our gift boxes.  We love her focus on unique, small batch runs and minimalist design.  Kristy has a background in Fashion and Textiles and is currently studying visual arts at Edith Cowan University.

We had a little Q & A with Kristy to find out more about FARLANDS ...

Tell us a little bit about FARLANDS?

FARLANDS is a Perth based small business established in 2014 by Siobhan O'Hallaron. I started working for Siobhan in early 2016, and in October she sold the biz to me- voila, it's all mine and I'm loving it!  I hand make leather clutches, purses, accessories and homewares all from premium leather materials.   FARLANDS also supports local businesses by sourcing as much of our leather and hardware stock as close to home as possible.  I aim to use every last inch of leather in the production of our goods, and make use of environmentally sustainable materials wherever possible.

How do you decide on your product range?

Siobhan had done all the hard work, then I stripped it back to only leather products and added some extra small batch items too. I keep focused on the minimal theme and try to produce fuss free practical leather goods.

How do you source your leather?  Is it hard to find the right quality and colours?

It's extremely hard to source great leather and for that reason prefer to do it in person than buy on line (so I know what I'm getting). At the moment the range is looking very tan so I'm hoping to find some interesting colours soon to add some variety. Saying that, the most popular colour is tan so I will always stock it!

Do you have any help with production?

I've had my partner help once before and I've also had a costume student from WAAPA do some work experience, otherwise it's just me.

We've heard you manage another small biz as well as having small children...how on earth do you fit it all in?  What are your top time management ninja techniques?

My time management is surprisingly OK but my social life lacks. I do most of my creating/invoicing after the kids go to bed.  I'm pretty speedy though and don't procrastinate too much. At the moment I'm "watching" my daughter at karate, whilst emailing you. My other business ties in well with this one as it is also creative, and I tend to manage just fine with the two...touch wood!

[Kristy is also the founder and Director of Eeny Creative Project, bringing a myriad of creative workshops to the Perth Community.]

We love that you customise so many items in your range with monogramming.  What is your most popular monogrammed item?

Wrist strap key ring for sure. Where would you be without it? The single most handiest item anyone can own!

Why do you think that buying local is gaining so much traction here in Perth?

I think there are more small businesses out there, especially working mums who know how hard it is to make a buck. If we can all support each other and buy a few amazing and original pieces every once in a while, we will all thrive.

You can find gorgeous FARLANDS items in our gift boxes, or find Kristy at the Perth Upmarket this Sunday 25th June at The University of Western Australia’s Winthrop Hall.
