Neil Turner is an ex-sheep and wheat farmer from country WA turned wood wizard. We first met Neil last year at the Perth Up Market and were mesmerized by his gorgeous gorgeous wooden spoons. Wooden spoons you ask?? Mesmerized by wooden spoons...that doesn't quite sound right. Seriously gang, these were captivating spoons, in all different sizes and shapes and divine timber-y hues. We had a lovely chat with Neil and his daughter Sigourney, who was helping out at the Up Market, and we knew that we had to include a wooden spoon somehow in our gift box range...(which we did! We cleverly teamed a Goldfields Blackbutt spatula with Olsson's smoked salt, Lirah Cabernet Vinegar and an Olioko linen screen-printed tea towel and called it 'the smoked gourmand' gift box).
Neil has been sculpting and turning wood for over 34 years and is damn good at it. He always had the urge to create...picking up mallee roots while ploughing the farm and knowing he could create something from them. He was lucky enough to have an extremely good manual arts teacher at school who instilled good practice and values in him, to further enhance his natural creative flair. He is an artist, creating the most amazing sculptures and furniture, which you can gasp at on his website. His work is shown in galleries and exhibitions all over Australia, as well as New York, LA, Chicago and other parts of the USA.
Neil Turner now resides on a 10 acre wooded block at Stratham, just south of Bunbury. Turner+Turner is a family affair, with all four of his children and his wife Suellen helping with the family business. Daughter Kallie Turner makes gorgeous leather goods and greeting cards under the Turner+Turner label too.
Neil's proudest achievement to date in his wood wizardry career is to have a sculpture on permanent display in the Carnegie Museum of Arts in Pittsburgh USA....as he says, it's a long way from sheep farming in Corrigin!
